My main goal for families in family therapy is to decrease high levels of expressed emotion while increasing responsive, not reactive, communication. In this model I am more of a teacher and coach than a therapist. I do this by first enlisting family members to vocalize their goals in therapy, then teaching the family about any psychiatric disorders in the family, especially mood or anxiety disorders. We discuss the brain, genetics, triggers, and, if necessary, medication. Then we move on to learning better communication and listening skills, problem solving skills, and positive psychology skills. Each sessions is designed and based on the Family Focused Therapy (FFT) model created by Dr. David Miklowitz, PhD. Although the sessions are structured, I always make sure to incorporate the family's immediate needs and goals. I incorporate my extensive knowledge regarding mood, anxiety, and behavioral disorders into the therapy, which ensures an evidenced-based treatment plan.
